Today is Midsummer’s Night – the longest and darkest night of the year. In many places, it’s traditional to dance around a Christmas tree on this night, have a silly time, enjoy each other’s company, and warm up in the cold.

In Sweden, people sing ‘The Little Frog’ song while dancing around the tree, with actions to accompany the words, e.g. they hop when they sing about the frog jumping, and make an exaggerated movement around their ears when singing about the frog listening. As few people speak Swedish in Rose Hill, we challenge you to find a tree (outside or inside), make a circle around it, holding hands, choose a well-known tune, and make up some silly words to go along with it.

Here is a song Libby, our chaplain, created, to the tune of ‘The ants came marching‛ (tune at the bottom):

The reindeer came marching one by one, hurrah! Hurrah!
The reindeer came marching one by one, hurrah! Hurrah!
The reindeer came marching one by one,
The little one stopped…to have snowy fun
Then they all came marching, over the rickety bridge.

The reindeer came marching two by two, hurrah! Hurrah!
The reindeer came marching two by two, hurrah! Hurrah!
The reindeer came marching two by two,
The little one stopped…to do a pooh
Then they all came marching, over the rickety bridge.

The reindeer came marching three by three, hurrah! Hurrah!
The reindeer came marching three by three, hurrah! Hurrah!
The reindeer came marching three by three,
The little one stopped…to get Santa’s key
Then they all came marching, over the rickety bridge…
Rickety bridge!

The reindeer came marching four by four, hurrah! Hurrah!
The reindeer came marching four by four, hurrah! Hurrah!
The reindeer came marching four by four,
The little one stopped…to knock on your door
Then they all came marching, over the rickety bridge…
Rickety bridge!

The reindeer came marching five by five, hurrah! Hurrah!
The reindeer came marching five by five, hurrah! Hurrah!
The reindeer came marching five by five,
The little one stopped…to have a jive
Then they all came marching, over the rickety bridge…
Rickety bridge!

The reindeer came marching six by six, hurrah! Hurrah!
The reindeer came marching six by six, hurrah! Hurrah!
The reindeer came marching six by six,
The little one stopped…to get his kicks
Then they all came marching, over the rickety bridge…
Rickety bridge!

The reindeer came marching seven by seven, hurrah! Hurrah!
The reindeer came marching seven by seven, hurrah! Hurrah!
The reindeer came marching seven by seven,
The little one stopped…to pray to Heaven
Then they all came marching, over the rickety bridge…
Rickety bridge!

The reindeer came marching eight by eight, hurrah! Hurrah!
The reindeer came marching eight by eight, hurrah! Hurrah!
The reindeer came marching eight by eight,
The little one stopped…to close the gate
Then they all came marching, over the rickety bridge…
Rickety bridge!

The reindeer came marching nine by nine, hurrah! Hurrah!
The reindeer came marching nine by nine, hurrah! Hurrah!
The reindeer came marching nine by nine,
The little one stopped…to smell the pine
Then they all came marching, over the rickety bridge…
Rickety bridge!

The reindeer came marching ten by ten, hurrah! Hurrah!
The reindeer came marching ten by ten, hurrah! Hurrah!
The reindeer came marching ten by ten,
The little one stopped…to build a den
Then they all came marching, over the rickety bridge…
Rickety bridge!
